EARTH DAY: RECYCLING CONTRIBUTES TO SUSTAINABILITY
The Malaysian plastics industry welcomes and supports the Government’s drive to ensure environmental protection is in tandem with Malaysia’s physical development, as stated by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the Taman Tugu World Earth Day celebrations on 20 April 2019.
This is why as responsible manufacturers, the members of the Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA) and the Malaysia Plastic Recyclers Association (MPRA), we support the Circular Economy model where the redeployment and reuse of resources is a key organising principle.
Recycling plays an important role in protecting the environment and properly managing and disposing of waste. As an economic activity, recycling creates new value that benefits society and contributes to sustainability.
A new framework was recently introduced by Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin, with 18 new criteria to ensure the legitimate recycling industry adheres to responsible practices which do not harm the environment.
That said, we take the stand that Malaysia has no place for other countries’ rubbish, and that we should not become the developed world’s dumping ground.
Local and international coverage of Earth Day have highlighted that developed countries such as the US and Australia are only now realising that they have been exporting household and municipal waste to South East Asia, and Malaysia in particular.
The Government has clamped down on the rampant smuggling of overseas household and municipal waste into Malaysia, as well as illegal operators who process the smuggled rubbish. The Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry, led by Minister Yeo Bee Yin, has closed down more than 150 of these illegal operations since July last year.
We continue to support and are ready to assist the Government in their efforts to crack down on these unscrupulous and illegal operators and to protect the environment.

ECOFIRST THIRD QUARTER NET PROFIT MORE THAN TRIPLE TO RM6.7 MILLION, REVENUE UP 63 PERCENT
ECOFIRST THIRD QUARTER NET PROFIT MORE THAN TRIPLE TO RM6.7 MILLION,
REVENUE UP 63 PERCENT
KUALA LUMPUR, 24 April 2019: PROPERTY development group EcoFirst Consolidated Bhd (EcoFirst) saw its third quarter net profit more than triple to RM6.7 million, boosted by contributions from the first phase of its flagship Ampang Ukay development, LIBERTY@Ampang Ukay (Liberty).
For the third quarter ended 28 February 2019, EcoFirst’s profit before tax also more than doubled to RM8 million, following a 63 percent jump in revenue to RM57.5 million.
“Our continued profitability shows that we are in a solid position for organic growth moving forward, despite the general slowdown in property,” said Dato’ Tiong Kwing Hee, Group Chief Executive Officer.
Organic growth drove its cumulative nine-month operational profit to RM15.5 million soared by 74 percent from RM8.9 million posted in the previous corresponding period, after adjusting for a one-off gain from the Government’s compulsory acquisition of land in December 2017. Recurring income from its retail mall, South City Plaza also contributed to its improved performance.
“With Liberty almost fully sold, we’ve proven our ability to design and build products that meet customers’ demands. We are now preparing for Phase 2 which will comprise of lower density condominiums offering larger-sized units that would suit young growing families,” Tiong said.
“Leveraging on Ampang Ukay’s strategic location and excellent connectivity, we believe that there will be strong demand for Phase 2. We target to launch in early 2020 and we expect Phase 2 to build on the success of Liberty.”
While Ampang Ukay remains EcoFirst’s main growth driver, the Group is also looking to expand its development activities by targeting opportunities to develop small pockets of land in prime, affluent neighbourhoods.
In December 2018, it had proposed to take a 70 percent stake in the Lone Pine group’s Geo Valley Sdn Bhd, which is developing a RM1.25 billion GDV mixed residential and commercial project in Paya Terubong.
This joint venture with the Penang-based Lone Pine group, which developed the award-winning One Tanjong luxury seafront condominium in Tanjung Bungah, is part of EcoFirst’s strategy to partner reputable and well-known brands for more impact that will boost EcoFirst’s bottom-line over the short and medium term.

Improved performance following a turnaround in second quarter net profit
KAJANG, 28 AUGUST 2019: Protasco Berhad’s turnaround is continuing to gather strength, posting a nine-time jump in its first half net profit to RM8.7 million despite a slightly lower revenue for the six months ended 30 June 2019.
The Group’s first half net profit surged 882 percent to RM8.7 million from RM881,000 in the first half last year. This improved performance came despite revenue dropping 11 percent to RM354.9 million, due to lesser periodic works awarded to its Maintenance segment.
For the second quarter, Protasco posted a RM4.6 million net profit, against a loss of RM407,000 in the same quarter last year.
This improved performance was the result of the Group’s right-sizing exercise that commenced in September 2018. The said exercise contributed to lower operating expenses which decreased 25.6 percent to RM53.8 million in the first half.
Aside from controlling cost and expenses, Protasco has seen a turnaround in its Construction segment, which posted a pre-tax profit of RM11.6 million in the first half against a loss of RM1.5 million in the preceding year corresponding period. The segment recorded a 54 percent jump in first half revenue to RM145.9 million, mainly due to contributions from the Perumahan Penjawat Awam (PPA) Phase 2 project and Drainage and Irrigation (DID) works awarded.
Its Property Development segment recorded higher revenue of RM3.4 million due to sales of units in its DeCentrum City development in Kajang.
“The transformation we are undergoing is not easy, but we are beginning to see results. Each segment is beginning to pick up momentum and move towards profitability. Our strategy is to ensure this momentum continues and will sustain us for the long run,” said Dato’ Sri Ir Chong Ket Pen, Executive Vice Chairman and Group Managing Director.
